Tito’s Ghost (2008)

Most of Eastern Europe’s Communist rulers have been quietly forgotten but Tito is different. Outside his country, he is widely credited for holding Yugoslavia together and guiding it to prosperity. But at home where his victory in World War Two once gave him the status of a living saint, Tito is now widely ignored. Mira Erdevicki’s sensitive film explores the career of this President for life of a country that no longer exists. She uses living witnesses to explore each phase of his rule but always with the contemporary question of how Tito has left his mark on people today. She reveals a disturbing history of myth and half truth that suggests Tito’s legacy continues to cast a shadow over much of the region.
